Taiwan legislature buys 200 bottles of Australian wine in support against China bullying
Taiwan’s parliamentary body, the Legislative Yuan, has purchased 200 bottles of Australian wine in support of an international inter-parliamentary action to counter China’s bullying of the Australian wine industry.
Members of the Inter-Parliamentary Alliance on China (IPAC), “an international cross-party group of legislators working to reform the approach of democratic countries to China,” recently called on consumers to stand up to Beijing.
The call comes after the CCP slapped “anti-dumping” import tariffs on Australian wines of up to 212%.
“We are asking you all to join us in standing against Xi Jinping’s authoritarian bullying,” said Miriam Lexmann, a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) in a video posted on Twitter, Tuesday.
President of the Legislative Yuan, Yu Shyi-kun posted on Facebook today, announcing that the Legislative Yuan had purchased 200 bottles of Australian wine to show solidarity against the despotism of the CCP.
“Today, the Legislative Yuan has purchased more than 200 bottles of Australian wine to stand with Australia.” Yu wrote.
The wines will be used in official reception ceremonies in the near future, Yu said. He also invited people to support the Australian wine industry and stand with Australia.
The Australian Office in Taipei posted its thanks on Facebook, yesterday, saying “Thanks for all your interest and well wishes supporting Australian winemakers. Of course, Australia has great wines, and we’d love to bring more of them to Taiwan.”
