Body of former Pegatron VP found on fourth day of search: autopsy reveals fatal injuries

Search and rescue personnel yesterday found the body of a retired tech company executive who went missing while hiking Saturday, March 26, and an autopsy today revealed that he had died after falling and breaking his neck.

Search team members from the New Taipei Fire Department found the body of Tsai Chin-kuo at the bottom of a slope around 50 meters below a hiking trail in the Manyueyuan National Forest Recreation Area in Sanxia District, New Taipei City, at around 11:30 am yesterday, Wednesday, March 30.

The 64-year-old former vice-president of Pegatron Corporation is believed to have taken the wrong fork on a trail in rainy conditions, and to have slipped and fallen down the slope.

Firefighters rappelled down a 50 meter high waterfall to recover the body.

A total of 457 firefighters, rescue workers and volunteers were involved in a search for Tsai starting on Sunday, March 27, when Tsai’s family reported him missing and posted an NT$1 million reward for finding him.

At around 11:00 am today, March 31, forensics examiners conducted an autopsy and determined that the fatal injury was a fractured cervical vertebra. Tsai had also sustained other injuries in the fall, including a fractured left clavicle, and multiple bruises.
