Two police officers and a handcuffed suspect were sent to hospital after being pulled out of a police car that left the freeway and rolled over following a collision with another vehicle today, December 7.
Officer Zhang (張), 34, suffered head lacerations and a broken jaw. A suspect named Zhu (朱), 21, had a suspected forearm fracture, and lacerations and bruises to both hands. Zhang and Zhu were taken to Tainan Sin-Lau Hospital for treatment. Officer Hong (洪), 31, was taken to Chi Mei Hospital suffering pain to his right chest, right hip, and right knee.
None of the injuries are considered life-threatening.
According to reports, the accident occurred at around 2:25pm at the 297 kilometer south mark in the southbound lanes of National Freeway 1 in Tainan City.
The two Taichung City Police Department officers were transporting a wanted man to Kaohsiung City after his arrest in Taichung City earlier today.
According to a preliminary investigation, the police car is believed to have hit an SUV in the right-rear section before careering off the road. None of the occupants in the SUV were injured.
While the cause of the accident is still being investigated, National Highway Police Bureau investigators told the media that it was simply a traffic accident, and did not involve an escape attempt by the suspect.
