Driver stops express train to scold motorist who breached level crossing barrier

The driver of an express train stopped his train and opened the window to berate a woman on a motor scooter who had stopped inside the boom gates at a level crossing in northeastern Taiwan yesterday, April 23.

Video footage uploaded to Facebook showed the driver of a Taroko Class express train (No.417) traveling northbound from Zhiben to Shulin Station stopped at the crossing on Donggang Road in Yilan City at 1:52 pm. The train driver slid the window open, stuck his head out, and appeared to scold the scooter rider, whose front wheel was just centimeters from the train. Unfortunately, the driver’s words were not clear on the video, due to the noise of the clanging bell warning. However, the driver appeared and sounded very angry. The driver then slammed the window shut, before proceeding forward.

The Railway Police Bureau at Yilan Station said that according to the video evidence, police will issue a penalty of between NT$15,000 and NT$90,000 to the scooter rider for failing to stop outside the crossing’s boom gate.
