Two Belgian tourists injured in cycling accident in north coast mountain district

Two Belgian men were injured after crashing their bicycles on a downhill section of a mountain road in Wanli District, New Taipei City, yesterday, Sunday, April 16.

According to Taiwanese media outlet SETN, the two men were part of a group of four cyclists riding on a downhill section of the Pingding Mountain Road when they crashed into a bridge pier. One of the men flew over the guardrail and fell into a streambed around 4 meters below the road.

The New Taipei City Fire Department received reports of the accident at 8:06 am and dispatched 7 vehicles and 16 personnel from fire stations in Shimen, Jinshan and Wanli.

A 35-year-old man was found to have suffered a broken collar bone and chest pains. A 33-year-old man was rescued from a stream bed 4 meters below the road with a fractured thigh.

Speed and unfamiliarity with local road conditions is suspected to have been a factor in the accident.
