Tearful Goodbyes after Burkino Faso Severs Diplomatic Relations
A post-graduate student of Taiwan’s Central Police University met junior high school students in Keelung to say an emotional goodbye, after his country caved into pressure from the People’s Republic of China, and broke diplomatic relations with Taiwan last week.
Zhou De-si (Hanyu Pinyin transliteration of: 周德思), went to Keelung’s Cheng Gong Junior High School today to farewell students and staff with whom he had shared the culture and customs of Burkino Faso during his stay in Taiwan.
The multi-lingual Zhou, who is fluent in English, French, and Chinese, and had studied for more than two years at the Central Police University, had built a great rapport with the students.
Students gave Zhou parting gifts and a card. Zhou appeared touched by the card, and said that Taiwan has always been so good to his country. Zhou said that he was sorry, and that he is just a small person in his country, not the president. If he were the president, because Taiwan has done so much for his country, despite China’s might, he would not break off from Taiwan.
Students applauded his statement, and Principle Chen called out the equivalent of “Zhou for President! Zhou for President!” Students comforted Zhou and urged him not to cry as he wiped away tears.
The students and their friend from Taiwan’s second-last diplomatic ally in Africa shared a cake, and the students urged Zhou to return to Taiwan to visit them in the future.
President Tsai Ing-wen slammed China for “serial acts of suppression” and “dollar diplomacy” last week, after Burkina Faso became the second country in a month to break off diplomatic ties with the nation, as Beijing attempts to isolate the island, and annex it.
