Newborn baby found abandoned in cardboard box in New Taipei City

Ambulance personnel found a newborn baby dumped in a cardboard box in Zhonghe District, New Taipei City, after responding to a report shortly after midnight this morning, March 27.

Update: Mother identified.

The baby girl still had the umbilical cord attached, and vital signs were stable. The infant was covered with a cloth, but had a lower than normal temperature, and was rushed to hospital for emergency treatment.

Police accessed traffic monitor footage from the site in Zhongyuan Street, and identified a suspect couple riding bicycles. The couple was traced back to Sanmin Road in Banciao District, but have not yet been positively identified.

The couple had placed the box on the sidewalk next to a park at around 7:00pm.

At around midnight, a person playing Pokemon Go noticed the cardboard box moving, and upon investigating, and expecting to find an abandoned pet, found the baby and called emergency services.

Apple Daily reported that police suspect the couple to be foreign migrant workers.
