A Changhua County man was charged with attempted murder yesterday, after a seriously injured 5 year-old girl was taken to hospital in the early hours of the morning.
The girl’s aunt told doctors that the girl had suddenly began twitching and vomiting after she went to bed. After an examination, an injury report showing the girl had been severely beaten and hit in the head with a blunt object was handed over to the District Prosecutor’s office. The report also noted that the girl had suffered heavy internal hemorrhage, and had a lot of new and old injuries, suggesting that she had undergone a long history of physical abuse.
The girl remains intubated in the intensive care unit in a coma with a GCI of 3 after doctors performed emergency surgery to relieve pressure on her brain.
After interrogating the aunt and uncle of the girl, the couple was arrested.
The aunt told police that the girl had been put in her care after the 22 year-old single mother married last year. The aunt’s husband was unemployed and did odd jobs, and collected recyclable materials for a living. The family was under a lot of economic pressure, and the uncle had beaten the girl after getting drunk.
After 9:00pm last night, the uncle was charged with attempted murder, and is being held in detention.
