Heavy rain and flood warnings issued as rainy season front hovers over Taiwan
The Central Weather Administration issued a heavy rain warning covering Taiwan’s western plains and central mountain range, with flood alert warnings in effect for Taichung, Miaoli, and Hsinchu as a rainy season front hovers over the island today, May 28.
At 7:55 am, a CWA heavy rain warning covered most of Taiwan from Keelung City in the north to Pingtung County in the south, excluding only the east coast counties of Yilan, Hualien, and Taidong. An extremely heavy rain warning was in effect for Taichung City, Miaoli County, Hsinchu County, Yunlin County, Chiayi County, and Tainan City.
There are reports of flooding in some low-lying areas, and flood-prone underpasses have been closed as a precaution in flood alert areas.
In Taichung City, water accumulated at the Houli exit ramp of National Highway 1, reducing traffic to one lane. National Highway Police urged motorists to find an alternate route as traffic began to back up at around 7:00 am.
According to the CWA forecast, the heavy rain will mostly affect the area in the morning and should ease in the afternoon.
