Gunman opens fire at Tainan City seafood store, takes a police bullet in the butt

A police officer shot a man in the buttocks after he had already fired 23 shots into the door of a seafood store in Tainan City, yesterday, June 2.

According to reports, a 32-year-old man, named Lin, fired 23 shots into the closed roller door of a shop in Wannian Street in Tainan City’s South District at around 1:00 pm.

Surveillance camera footage of the incident showed Lin getting out of a silver Toyota Yaris and opening fire at the store using what appears to be an assault rifle. Just seconds after Lin starts shooting, three police officers arrive in an unmarked car. One of the officers fires from the rear seat window of the car. Lin immediately drops the gun, puts his hand to his backside, and collapses.

Tainan City Chief of Police Liao Zongshan expressed his gratitude to police officers for obtaining information in advance, and quickly resolving the critical situation. Chief Liao commended senior Criminal Investigation Department officer, Zheng Qiangsheng, with an award for excellence and recommended him for special promotion.

Zheng, a 30-year police veteran, was reluctant to take credit for his actions as he was soon to retire and didn’t want his family to worry that he was risking his safety and still working in front line policing at his age.

According to the police investigation so far, Lin has previous convictions for drugs, theft, and injury. Police a continuing investigations to determine the motive for the shooting and the source of the firearm.
