Evergreen Marine ship EVER FORWARD finally moving after one month stuck aground in Chesapeake Bay

A container ship belonging to Taiwan shipping giant Evergreen Marine Corp. has finally been refloated after running aground in Chesapeake Bay on the US east coast more than one month ago.

The 334-meter-long, 117,340 gross ton Ever Forward ran aground on a muddy bottom after leaving the Port of Baltimore and “missing a turn” on March 13. The grounding came just 10 days short of the anniversary of Evergreen’s Ever Given getting stuck and blocking the Suez Canal from March 23 to March 29, 2021.

Several attempts to refloat the Ever Forward failed, despite the efforts of multiple tugs and a dredging operation. The salvage operation finally resorted to unloading around 10% of the approximately 5,000 containers on the vessel. Operators then took advantage of the spring high tide on a full moon yesterday, Sunday, April 17, and successfully moved the ship into deeper water.

The Ever Forward is now anchored off Annapolis where it will be inspected for hull damage before being cleared to return to the Port of Baltimore to reload the off-loaded containers before resuming its original journey.

“A tremendous team effort with a little help from the Easter Sunday rising tide in the Chesapeake Bay. The Evergreen, Ever Forward has been refloated,” wrote Executive Director at Maryland Port Administration, William Doyle on Linked In.
