Drunk driver hits and kills road worker, attempts to leave the scene of the accident

A road construction worker died after being hit by a drunk driver in New Taipei City in the early hours of this morning, and his fellow workers used their construction vehicles to block the way after the offending driver attempted to drive away from the scene of the accident.

According to reports, at around 2:00 am a 29-year-old woman driving a BMW convertible from Taipei City to Tamsui District hit a 54-year-old traffic controller, named Fang, who was directing traffic around a road construction site in front of the Zhuwei Police Station.

Fang lost vital signs at the scene of the accident, and was rushed to Mackay Memorial Hospital, but he was declared dead at 2:53 am.

According to members of the road construction crew, the driver attempted to leave the scene of the accident, but workers used their vehicles to block her escape. Police from the station immediately opposite the scene of the accident then arrested the driver.

The woman, named Lin, was found to have a blood alcohol level of 0.77 mg/l. According to the police investigation, Lin had consumed “a few” glasses of red wine before driving her BMW Z4 roadster with a 28-year-old woman, named Huang, as a passenger.

Lin was handed over to the District Prosecutor’s Office to be charged on suspicion of causing public danger and negligent homicide.

Huang will also face a fine of between NT$6,000 and NT$150,000 according to provisions of the Road Traffic Management Act.
