Driver goes wrong way on elevated expressway: motorcyclist plunges to his death

A driver accidentally drove on an elevated expressway in the wrong direction, causing an accident that sent a motorcyclist plunging more than 20 meters to the ground in Taipei City late last night, January 25.

According to reports, a 41-year-old woman, named Wu, was following instructions from a GPS navigation system when she crossed double-yellow lines on Huandong Boulevard in Neihu District, and drove onto an elevated section of road into oncoming traffic lanes. Dashcam footage from Wu’s car showed that Wu quickly veered left when headlights suddenly appeared in her lane. Wu’s SUV collided head on with a motorcycle, and was also hit by the oncoming car.

The 22-year-old motorcyclist, named Liu, flew over the guardrail and fell more than 20 meters to the ground below. Liu lost vital signs at the scene of the accident and was declared dead after being rushed to the hospital.

According to the preliminary police investigation, none of the three drivers were affected by alcohol at the time of the accident.

Wu was fined for driving in the wrong direction (NT$600-NT$1,800), and sent to the District Prosecutor to be charged on suspicion of endangering the public and negligent injury causing death.
