Driver Arrested after Fatal Hit and Run

A man was arrested in New Taipei City this afternoon, after an elderly woman was hit and killed by a car in Taoyuan City early this morning, April 10.

Ms Zhao, 71, went out for her regular morning exercise at around 4:00am, but was hit by a car while crossing the road on a pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Minshing and Hekou Roads, and was later declared dead in hospital.

Police accessed traffic surveillance camera footage and identified a white BMW belonging to a 34 year-old man named Hsu.

Hsu did not return home, and turned his mobile phone off, but police traced his location to a friend’s home in New Taipei City. Police arrested the suspect at 3:00pm this afternoon.

When reporters asked Hsu if he had fled the scene of the accident because he was drink driving, Hsu shook his head and said no.

Police subjected Hsu to a compulsory blood and urine analysis on suspicion that he had been drink driving. Hsu is being investigated on suspicion of endangering the public causing death, and fleeing the scene of an accident.
