Convenience Store Clerk Stabbed 5 Times after Customer Loses Face
A man who struggled to come up with enough money to purchase drinks and snacks at a Family Mart convenience store in Sanchong District, New Taipei City, stabbed the clerk after feeling humiliated by a comment.
Shortly before midnight last night, a 44-year-old man named Ye put more than NT$100 worth of goods on the counter, and pulled NT$30 in small change out of his pocket. While feeling around for more change, the clerk, who had experience with Mr Ye not having enough money in the past, took the goods off the counter and said: “If you don’t have money, you cannot buy.”
Mr Ye, feeling humiliated, took out a folding knife and stabbed the clerk in the abdomen, hands, and legs. The clerk, Mr Lei, 19, was stabbed a total of 5 times.
As Ye fled the store, Mr Lei, bleeding from his wounds, chased Ye for a distance of around 200 meters, until Lei collapsed on a bench in front of a 7-11 convenience store. A passerby who witnessed the incident continued chasing Ye until police arrived, suppressed the suspect with pepper spray, and arrested him.
Ye told police that he had been slow to take out the money, and that he felt dissatisfied with the clerk’s attitude. The clerk had degraded him, Ye said. After making his statement, Ye, who has previous criminal records relating to guns, drugs, and other offences, was handed over to the District Prosecutor to face the charge of attempted murder.
