Bus fire on freeway causes peak-hour traffic jam on Highway 1
A bus driver managed to pull over to the shoulder of the road and evacuate passengers before the vehicle was consumed by flames on National Highway 1 in New Taipei City this morning.
According to reports, the 51-year-old driver pulled over and stopped on the road shoulder after he noticed unusual sounds and smoke while traveling in the northbound lanes on the elevated Yangmei to Wugu section of Highway 1 in Taishan District at around 7:15 am.
The driver and six passengers evacuated the bus before flames spread and completely consumed the vehicle.
Traffic on the Taipei-bound lanes were reduced to one lane during peak commuter traffic time, causing a serious traffic jam extending several kilometers.
