Biggest Cannabis Growing Op in Taiwan History Busted in Taitung

Taitung Coastguard investigators and police raided a property in Taitung City December 3, and uncovered a cannabis growing operation containing 794 plants, 7 kilograms of dried marijuana, and prepackaged marijuana cigarettes. Investigators claim the market value of the haul is worth over NT$230 million, and is the biggest ever in Taiwan.

Two men, Mr Zhang, 60, and Mr Chen, 68, were arrested and are being detained incommunicado on suspicion of producing and manufacturing a class 2 drug.

Investigators said they had been tipped off that the two men had rented land in the Fengyuan area near Zhiben on the pretext of growing eucalyptus leaves, but were actually growing cannabis on the property. The investigators waited until the time was ripe, and obtained a search warrant to raid the property on December 3.

At a press conference in Taitung City today, Coast Guard investigators, police, and prosecutors spoke to the media about the massive size of the haul. Some of the plants were over 2 meters tall, and the total amount of product was enough to poison hundreds of thousands of people, they said.

“It was enough for everybody in Taitung to have a smoke,” SETN reported.

A spokesperson for Taitung District Prosecutor’s Office said “fortunately it was investigated and stopped in time to prevent the poisoning of fellow countrymen.”

In August 2017, an indoor growing operation with close to 600 cannabis plants was uncovered in Tucheng District, New Taipei City.

How could anyone be ‘poisoned’ by such herb? Just plain obscene how the government is brainwashing the masses. The Taiwan government could regulate such sales by slapping some tax on that stash and it will generate plenty of income.. Then again, we just don’t want people to have a good time through natural highs but rather suffer kidney and liver damage through prescription meds and 24-hour 7 Eleven’s selling alcohol?

    Good.

If you don’t like the law, change it or emigrate.

Change it [the law] and make it [cannabis use] legal through taxation which will generate billions, along with keeping the ‘NEATS’ occupied and very happy!
