Armed robber targeted Dominos Pizza because company cares

A man arrested for the armed robbery of a pizza store in New Taipei City in May, told the court that he chose a Dominos Pizza outlet as his target because the company trained their staff to value their lives and not to resist when facing an armed robber.

During the trial and sentencing, the Taipei District Court heard that Qiu Zhenyu walked into a branch of Dominos Pizza in Hsintien District, New Taipei City at 9:52 am on Monday morning, May 31.

Qiu threatened the female store manager with a replica pistol and a fruit knife then made away with NT250,000 in cash.

Qiu is known to have an intimate knowledge of the pizza takeaway and delivery business, having worked in the industry before leading a gang on a brazen series of more than 10 pizzeria robberies between 1998 and 2000.

Qiu was eventually arrested and sentenced to a term in prison. After his release from prison, Qiu managed to stay clean for more than 10 years until a lack of money due to shortage of work during the COVID-19 pandemic caused Qiu to go back to his familiar old ways.

Qiu confessed to the court that he had chosen a Dominos Pizza store as his target because the company had a conscientious approach to worker safety.

The Dominos Pizza chain provides in-store training for employees which includes teaching staff to not resist if faced with a robbery, Qiu informed the court.

The Taipei District Court found Qiu guilty of aggrevated robbery and sentenced him to a 5 year prison term.
