2 men escape sinking car and run away after crashing into fishing port

Two men suspected to be undocumented migrant workers escaped from a sinking car and ran away after driving the car at high speed into Nanliao Fishing Port in Hsinchu City on Friday night.

Police and firefighters responded to reports of a vehicle crashing into the water at the port at 8:22 pm, June 30.

Witnesses at the scene said that two men escaped from the driver’s window immediately following the crash. The men were reported to have swum to shore on their own, then disappeared.

Divers from the Hsinchu County Fire Bureau spent more than one hour searching the vehicle and surrounds to confirm there were no other occupants of the vehicle.

The owner of the vehicle was found to be a female Vietnamese national who told investigators that she had loaned the car to two Vietnamese men, but was not sure of their actual identities.

According to the investigation so far, the silver 4-door hatchback was travelling at high speed when it crashed through a guardrail and flew an estimated 7 to 8 meters before hitting the water.

Police are continuing investigations and trying to find the two men who are suspected to be undocumented migrant workers of Vietnamese nationality.
