2 killed, Tesla disintegrates in high-speed drunk driving crash on Taichung City expressway

A driver with a blood alcohol level almost three times over the legal limit was one of two men who died at the scene of the accident after a Tesla slammed into a concrete Jersey barrier on an expressway in Taichung City early Sunday morning, May 7.

Taichung City Fire Bureau responded to reports of the crash at an offramp of Expressway 74 in Xitun District at 5:48 am.

Firefighters and paramedics found the vehicle had completely disintegrated due to the force of the impact. Two men were found among the debris, and both had lost vital signs by the time paramedics arrived. A 24-year-old man, named Hong, and a 25-year-old man, named Yang, were given CPR and rushed to hospital, but were declared dead a short time after arrival.

Both men were tested post-mortem for alcohol. Hong was found to have a blood alcohol level of 0.32 mg/l, and Yang 0.61 mg/l. Although it was impossible to determine who was driving at the scene of the crash, a post mortem examination of marks left by seat belts suggested that Yang, whose father owns the Tesla Model Y, was the driver.

According the the investigation, Yang and Hong had left a popular night club a short time before the accident.
