13 injured in freeway bus accident

Thirteen people were treated for slight injuries after a bus rear-ended a truck on National Highway 1 this afternoon in Taichung City.

Emergency services responded to a report of the accident in the northbound lanes of the Fengyuan section at 4:17 pm.

The most serious injury was a fractured arm suffered by the driver of the Kuo-Kuang company intercity bus. The rest of the injured were passengers of the bus, two of whom suffered broken teeth, and others scratches and bruises.

The bus was carrying 30 passengers at the time of the accident, and had just left Taichung City en route to Taipei.

According to a preliminary investigation, a car cut in front of the truck in order to reach an exit ramp, causing the truck driver to brake hard. The bus driver applied brakes, but was unable to stop in time.

Both drivers tested negative for alcohol.

The cause of the accident is under investigation by the National Highway Police Bureau.
