A man splashed acid, injuring three people, then cut his own throat and died at the women’s dormitory at National Taiwan University shortly after midnight, this morning.
According to preliminary police investigations, the deceased was a 25 year-old post-graduate student at Taiwan University of Science and Technology named Zhang, and the target of his attack was a 23 year-old male student studying psychology at NTU named Xie.
According to Chinese language media reports, Zhang went to the dormitory armed with 2 bottles of sulfuric acid and a sharp weapon looking for Xie. A loud and intense altercation outside the dormitory ensued, leading the female dormitory supervisor to come out and attempted to mediate in the dispute. The supervisor invited the men into the dormitory lobby.
While in the lobby, Zhang appeared calm and opened a bottle pretending to be about to take a drink, then suddenly splashed the contents towards Xie. Another student name Luo, 23, and the dormitory warden, Ms Gu, was also splashed by the corrosive liquid.
Zhang then took a knife out of his backpack, cut his own throat, and collapsed.
Ambulance officers said that Zhang was already dead when they arrived at the scene. Three people suffering acid burns were rushed to National Taiwan University Hospital for treatment.
At the time of writing Xie is still in hospital with his condition described in media as “not out of danger.” Luo and the dorm warden have both been released from hospital.
The incident drew a large number of onlookers from the university dormitories. In the early hours of the morning NTU Student Union issued an emergency announcement via Facebook urging students to not spread bloody images in order to prevent unnecessary fear.
