Woman electrocuted while wading through floodwater in Kaohsiung City

A woman is fighting for her life in hospital after collapsing beside a transformer box on a flooded sidewalk in Kaohsiung City yesterday, and it is suspected that she was electrocuted due to exposed wires on a lamp post.

The 39-year-old woman named Kao was holding an umbrella and walking through floodwater on Sanmin Road late yesterday afternoon after thunderstorms inundated Kaohsiung City and surrounding districts with more than 100 millimeters of rain in just over an hour, causing sudden flooding in many areas of the city.

Kao suddenly collapsed while passing between a transformer box and a street light. Kao lost vital signs and only recovered a heartbeat after being rushed to Kaohsiung Armed Forces General Hospital. Kao’s condition is described as critical and she is currently dependent on life support machines.

Video monitor footage released today showed the moment Kao collapsed, and an investigation has revealed exposed wires on the street light post suspected to have leaked electricity into the floodwater.
