Under-aged, Unlicensed Teen Killed in Scooter Accident, Another Seriously Injured
A 14 year-old boy died and a 13 year-old is in a critical condition after the two boys crashed a scooter on a mountain road in Taichung yesterday. Neither boy was wearing a helmet.
Three junior high students were enjoying the day at an uncle’s fishing pond when they decided to buy some fireworks rockets. Two of the boys took the uncle’s unlicensed scooter to go to a grocery store, while a third boy rode a bicycle and followed. On the way back to the fishing ponds, the boys on the scooter lost control on a downward slope and crashed into a concrete barrier. When the boy on the bicycle found them, he flagged down a car and asked them to call for help.
When ambulance officers arrived at the scene, a passerby was doing CPR on the 14 year-old Zhu (朱) who had no heartbeat and was not breathing. The 13 year-old Zheng (鄭) was semi-conscious after suffering a head injury. Zhu was declared dead at the hospital after not responding to resuscitation efforts, while Zheng remains in intensive care after undergoing emergency surgery.
Zhu’s uncle, who owns the fish pond said that he didn’t know the boys had taken his scooter. The scooter had been de-registered and the license plates handed in, and was only used for duties around the fishing property. As such, the keys were always left in the vehicle.
