The bus was not carrying any passengers at the time, but the driver was trapped in the badly damaged vehicle, and sent to hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries. An employee of the betel nut stall was also slightly injured.

According to reports, heavy rain and wind generated by Typhoon Koinu was lashing the coast at the time of the crash, and may have been a factor in causing the accident.
