Two separate bus accidents on Taiwan’s east coast occurred just 11 minutes apart: 21 injured
A bus driver in Hualien County was seriously injured, and 19 passengers on a bus in Yilan County suffered minor injuries, in two separate bus accidents that occurred just 11 minutes apart this afternoon, Wednesday, October 4.
In Yilan County, a tour bus traveling from Hualien City to Taoyuan rear-ended another coach in the northbound lanes at the exit of the Su’ao Tunnel on Provincial Highway 9 at 3:19 pm. Nineteen passengers on the rear bus suffered cuts and bruises and were treated at three local hospitals.
At 3:30 pm, a medium-sized bus belonging to Farglory Hotel crashed into a light pole and a roadside betel nut stall on Nanbin Road in Ji’an Township. The bus was not carrying any passengers at the time, but the driver was trapped in the badly damaged vehicle, and sent to hospital with serious, but not life-threatening injuries. An employee of the betel nut stall was also slightly injured.
According to reports, heavy rain and wind generated by Typhoon Koinu was lashing the coast at the time of the crash, and may have been a factor in causing the accident.
