Two officers slashed, suspect shot in Taipei City

Police officers shot a suspect twice in the legs as he attempted to escape after injuring two officers with a knife in Taipei City last night, July 14.

Two police officers, Wen (溫), 32, and Lee (李), 20, were on patrol when they noticed a man behaving suspiciously at the corner of Juguang Road and Zhonghua Road at around 11:30pm.

Police approached the suspect and identified him as a 30-year-old wanted man named Shen (沈). As the officers were preparing to arrest Shen, Shen pulled out a knife and threatened the officers.

When the officers took out pepper spray, Shen charged at them with the knife. In the ensuing struggle, officer Wen was cut on the right arm and cheek, and Lee was cut on his left hand and leg.

Shen then attempted to run into the stairwell of a residential building. Believing the situation was critical, and that residents might be harmed by the knife-wielding suspect, the officers fired, hitting Shen in the right thigh and left calf.

Ten police officers arrived in support to arrest Mr Shen. Shen was sent to Taiwan University Hospital to have his wounds treated, and the two wounded officers were sent to Heping Hospital.
