Two Highway Police Injured, one Critically, while attending Breakdown on Freeway

Two Highway Police officers were injured, and one is in a life-threatening condition, after a car plowed into their vehicle at high speed on National Freeway one in Taoyuan City in the early hours of this morning, November 23.

Three officers from the Yangmei Highway Police station were called out to a breakdown in the southbound lanes on the Hukou Road section of the freeway at around 1:00am. The officers stopped their patrol car behind the broken down vehicle with emergency lights and beacon lights flashing.

An officer had just exited the car to place an emergency warning triangle behind the vehicle when an oblivious driver failed to heed the warning lights and headed toward the stopped vehicles at full speed.

Video footage of the accident shows the officer with a light baton and a flashlight attempting to get the driver’s attention before it plows into the back of the patrol car.

Two officers who were still in the patrol car were seriously injured. A 21 year-old officer named Wang-Huang who was sitting in the back seat of the patrol car was at the time of writing in a critical condition with a coma index of 3, after suffering cerebral hemorrhage, abdominal hemorrhage, and a ruptured liver. A 51 year-old officer named Lin who was sitting in the front passenger seat suffered a broken arm and is not in danger.

The driver of the SUV, a 35 year-old engineer named Wang tested negative for alcohol, and said that he was returning to his company at the Hsinchu Science Park, and travelling in the inner lane at 100 kilometers per hour at the time of the accident. Wang said he was not aware of conditions ahead, because he was tired.
