Two freeway maintenance workers dead after trailer truck slams into work vehicle

Two road maintenance workers died at the scene of the accident after a B-double semi-trailer slammed into their vehicle parked on the shoulder of National Highway 3 in Miaoli County this morning, Monday, June 19.

According to reports, the two men, one aged in his 30s, and the other in his 60s, were about to start mowing and weed removal beside the freeway at the 140.7 kilometer north mark in Tonxiao Township when a truck veered into the road shoulder and hit the collision buffering trailer of the work vehicle at around 10:00 am. The men were run over by their own vehicle, and were found trapped beneath it.

When Fire Department paramedics arrived, one man was obviously dead, and the other had lost vital signs. Attempts were made to resuscitate the second man, but efforts were not successful.

A third worker survived unscathed.

The driver of the semi-trailer was tested for alcohol and cleared of drunk driving. Police took the driver in for questioning and are expected to hand him over to the District Prosecutor to be charged with negligent homicide.
