The driver of a truck that rear-ended a semi-trailer on the Formosa Freeway this morning is in a coma after sustaining critical injuries. Police say there are no signs of brake marks on the road.
The accident happened around 5:00am in the northbound lanes of Freeway #3 at the 142km mark in Miaoli County. Police said it appeared that the 55 year-old driver of the goods truck failed to keep a safe distance between his vehicle and the coal truck in front of him.
The driver of the coal truck will be fined NT$165, 000 after it was found that his truck was overloaded and carrying almost double the maximum legal load.
The semi-trailer, with a maximum legal load of 35 tons, was carrying 68 tons of coal, and was slowly and sluggishly accelerating after entering the highway from an entry ramp when the goods truck slammed into the back.
The driver of the goods truck had to be cut out of the mangled wreck of his vehicle. The driver suffered multiple fractures all over his body, chest injuries and head injuries, and was unconscious.
