Tour de Taiwan 2017 Stage 1 Completed in Taipei
Stage 1 of Tour de Taiwan was hosted on a wet and rainy Sunday in Taipei City this morning, March 26, 2017. Columbian cyclist Edwin Avila of the Illuminate team took first place honors with a time of 1 hour 39 minutes to complete the 83.2 kilometer race.
England’s Russel Downing on the JLT Condor team took second place, and Italian Paolo Lunardon, RTS-Monton team came third.
Wet conditions contributed to two pile-ups on the final corners of the circuit. The first accident led to around 10 racers going down. On the final corner 3 cyclists slid and fell.
The 83.2 kilometer race consisted of 8 laps of a 10.4 kilometer circuit that ran from Taipei City Hall down Renai Road to Taipei East Gate, and back.
Stage 2, New Taipei City starts at 9:00am tomorrow, March 27, in Danshui (Tamsui) District. Stage 2 is a 114 kilometer race that includes hills and follows the coast through Ximen, Jinshan, and Wanli Districts.
Tour de Taiwan is a 5 stage competition over 5 days from March 26 to March 30. The complete tour covers 682.11 kilometers. Stage 3 will take place in Taoyuan County, stage 4 in Nantou County, and stage 5 in Pingtung County.
