Three Arrested in Xinzhuang Murder-robbery Case
Three suspects have been arrested after an elderly woman and her daughter were found bound and gagged, one dead, and one unconscious, in their Xinzhuang District apartment on the evening of July 26.
At around 8:00pm Thursday evening, a man named Lee called police after being unable to contact his mother and sister, and finding the door of their Zhonghe Road residence locked. After firefighters forced the door open, the two women were found bound, gagged, and blindfolded, laying on the floor wrapped in blankets.
The 90 year-old mother was found without trace of heartbeat or breathing, and was declared dead at the hospital. The deceased woman’s 67 year-old daughter was unconscious, and was sent to the hospital for emergency treatment.
After regaining consciousness, Ms Lee provided information to police that pointed to a suspect named Lin. As the investigation progressed, two accomplices, Zhang and Peng, also became suspects.
Police arrested the 33 year-old Peng in Banqiao District yesterday, July 27. At around midnight last night, Lin, 34, and Zhang, 37, were arrested at a hotel in Nantou County.
According to the investigation, on the afternoon of July 26, Lin, a friend of the family, convinced the two women to take three sleeping pills each, telling them that they were tonics for the liver and kidneys. At around 2:00pm, after the women lost consciousness, Lin called his two accomplices to come upstairs.
Zhang and Peng tied the women up and gagged and blindfolded them. Then the men searched the house for money and valuables.
At around 5:00pm, Lin left the residence, leaving Peng and Zhang. When Peng and Zhang heard Ms Lee’s son knocking on the door at around 6:00pm, they left through a back window. The suspects claim that the two women were breathing when they left, and that they only found out that one of the women had died when they saw the news on TV later that evening.
After Lin’s arrest, he was taken back to Xinzhuang Police Station, where he repeatedly said sorry to media waiting outside the building. Lin told police that he had committed the robbery because he was short of money, but said that he had no intention to kill.
