Plastics Factory Burns for 16 hours

A fire at a plastics factory in Taoyuan City was finally extinguished this morning after firefighters battled the blaze for 16 hours.

The fire broke out in a plastics scrap yard located next to the factory in Guanyin District yesterday at around 3:00pm, and spread quickly due to the large amount of stored flammable materials. A total of 176 firefighters and 41 vehicles were dispatched to fight the blaze.

The fire produced a large pall of thick, black smoke, which was visible up to 4 kilometers away. Residents complained about the serious air pollution.

The Environmental Protection Bureau issued a penalty this morning and said that the operators will face a fine of between NT$100,000 and NT$1 million according to the provisions of the Air Pollution Law.

The Taoyuan City Fire Department said that the fire destroyed around 5,500 square meters of storage yard, factory, and sheds. Fortunately, there were no casualties. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
