Taiwan Swelters: CWB Advises on Sun-Protection

Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau this morning issued an alert by instant messaging advising people to pay attention to sun-protection, drink plenty of water, and take measures to avoid heat-stroke, after temperatures reached 36°C at 9:43am in Taitung, and was expected to rise further during the day.

The CWB said that Taiwan is currently under the influence of a Pacific high pressure system, and the Taipei area will experience temperatures between 33 and 36 °C, with a comfort level (heat index) of 42°C. The extreme heat is expected to continue into tomorrow, June 26. While temperatures will drop 1-2°C thereafter, it will still remain hot.

The UV index was said to easily reach an excessive or dangerous level, and people should try to stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day, and wear sun protection when they have to go out.

Weather Bureau forecaster, Wu Derong, said the day would begin clear and sunny, with increased cloudiness during the afternoon, and isolated thunderstorms bringing heavy, but brief showers to some areas.
