A driver who allegedly fled from the scene of a fatal accident in Taoyuan City yesterday, was found dead in Yilan County last night, suspected of having committed suicide.
Police began an investigation into a fatal hit and run case after a woman was found without vital signs beside her badly-damaged motor scooter in the middle of an intersection in Dayuan District. The 23-year-old woman, named Liang, was rushed to hospital, but declared dead after arrival.
Police investigators accessed traffic surveillance camera footage which showed a white sedan cutting across double-yellow lines to execute a left turn, causing Liang to crash into the vehicle. A man was seen exiting the car for a brief time before fleeing the scene of the accident.
Police identified the owner of the car and began a search for a 69-year-old man, named Liao. At around 10:00 pm last night, Liao’s vehicle was found parked beside a temple in Su’ao Township, Yilan County. Liao’s lifeless body was found hanging in a sheet-metal building beside the temple. Liao was obviously dead, and was not sent to the hospital. A suicide note found beside the body expressed that he could not face the tragedy that had occurred earlier that day, nor was he able to compensate the victim.
