Suspect accidentally shot during arrest at freeway rest stop
Miaoli County police fired 7 shots, one of which hit a suspect in the abdomen after the wanted man attempted to ram police at a freeway rest stop this morning, September 27.
Police said that the 49-year-old suspect, named Su, was wanted on suspicion of having committed cable thefts in Tongxiao and Sanyi townships. Tongxiao Township police notified their counterparts at the Sanyi police station that Su’s car had been spotted at the Sanyi Cheting Service Area – a freeway rest stop in Sanyi Township.
When police approached Su’s vehicle, Su attempted to escape by driving erratically, putting police officers in danger. A total of seven shots were fired by police at the tires and windows of the suspect’s car, one of which accidentally hit Su in the right side of his abdomen.
Su was rushed to hospital where he was treated for a non-life-threatening bullet wound. Police then made a formal arrest, handcuffing him to his hospital bed.
Police said the suspect had previously rammed into police vehicles when they attempted to arrest him in March this year. Therefore police were prepared and took special precautions during this morning’s arrest.
