Stop work orders issued as northern Taiwan prepares for Typhoon Lekima
Northern counties and municipalities in Taiwan have ordered work and classes suspended for Friday, August 9, as a category 4 typhoon approaches on a trajectory that is predicted to engulf the area within its 280 kilometer storm radius.
At 9:00pm Thursday, Lekima was located 24.4° north, 124.9° east, 350 kilometers east of Taipei, moving northwest at 18 kilometers per hour.
The eye of typhoon Lekima is expected to pass to the north of the island late Thursday night and Friday, and northeastern Taiwan will bear the brunt of heavy rain and strong winds.
The moderate typhoon intensified Thursday into a strong typhoon and further intensification has not been ruled out by Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau.
Stop work orders were issued for Taipei City, New Taipei City, Keelung City, Yilan County, Taoyuan County, Hsinchu County, and Hsinchu City at 8:00pm Thursday.

High Speed Rail Services Suspended
Taiwan High Speed Rail announced cancellation of train services between Taichung and Taipei cities Friday, while services between Taichung City and Kaohsiung City would be limited to three trains per hour in each direction.
Vulnerable Residents Evacuated
Hsinchu County Fire Department evacuated 100 people from the mountainous Jianshi and Wufeng townships, giving priority to the pregnant, elderly, and people suffering chronic diseases.
In New Taipei City, 867 people were evacuated from landslide-prone areas in mountain districts.
YouBike Suspends Service
The YouBike bicycle share service will stop operating at 2:00am Friday 9 in order to maintain the safety of customers. Resumption of services will be announced according to weather conditions.
