Singaporean couple identified as suspects after dead newborn found dumped as garbage

Taipei police investigators are seeking a Singaporean couple after the body of a newborn baby, complete with placenta and umbilical cord attached, was found dumped in a bucket of food waste in Taipei City, February 26.

Workers at a recycling plant in Xindian District alerted police after finding the remains of a female infant wrapped in a plastic bag early Tuesday morning.

Police investigators worked around the clock, accessing footage from hundreds of street cameras along the route of the garbage truck until finally identifying a male suspect who was seen dumping the bag into a bucket of kitchen waste outside a restaurant in the Ximending area of Wanhua District, Taipei City.

The man then went to a convenience store and purchased milk and snacks.

Police interviewed workers in the convenience store who recognized the man as a foreign-accented mandarin-speaker staying at a nearby hotel.

The suspect couple have been identified and named in a China Times report as a 24-year-old woman named Guo (郭), and a 23-year-old man named Lee
(李) .

Guo and Lee arrived in Taiwan on February 19, and left on February 26, the day the discarded corpse was found.

Forensics detectives took blood samples from the hotel room’s bathroom, according to media reports.

Hotel workers told an Apple Daily reporter that the woman appeared pregnant when the couple checked in, but her belly no longer protruded when the couple left.

Taiwan’s Criminal Investigation Bureau has contacted Singapore Police and requested they assist in the investigation.

It is not known whether the baby was stillborn or died after birth. An autopsy will be performed on March 5 to determine the cause of death.
