Road Worker Killed in Hit and Run: Truck Driver Arrested
A truck driver was arrested in Pingtung County late last night after police traced a vehicle involved in a fatal hit and run incident on National Freeway 3 yesterday afternoon.
At around 2:50pm, in the south bound lanes of Freeway 3 in Tainan, a 57 year old road construction worker died after a truck crashed through traffic cones into a newly-paved section of road. More than a dozen workers were engaged in installing reflectors on the section at the time.
The truck driver then accelerated away from the scene of the accident, according to this Liberty Times report.
The seriously injured worker, named Guo, was rushed to hospital, but lost vital signs before arrival, and was declared dead at around 4:00pm.
Police traced the vehicle using traffic monitor footage and ETC monitors. At around 8:00pm, the vehicle was found in Pingtung County, and a 64 year-old man named Lin was taken in for questioning.
Pieces of the truck found at the scene of the accident, including a broken side-step, matched the damaged vehicle.
Mr Lin admitted that he hit traffic cones, but claimed that he did not know that he had hit a person.
