Retired cop rescues elderly woman being stabbed by man with a screwdriver

A retired police officer rescued an elderly female fruit vendor after a man attempting to rob her fruit stall held her down and stabbed her repeatedly with a screwdriver in Keelung City this morning, May 9.

At around 6:00 am, Mr Chen, who is in his 60s and retired from the police force six years ago, was passing by the fruit vendor when he heard the 80-year-old woman, named Wu, screaming for help.

Chen rushed to Ms Wu’s assistance, grabbing her assailant, named Zhang, 50, and using his police training to disarm and restrain Zhang.

During the struggle with Zhang, Mr Chen was bitten on the arm, stabbed in the thigh, and suffered a cut to his hand that required two stitches.

Ms Wu was rushed to hospital, having suffered multiple puncture wounds to her abdomen. Fortunately, Wu had been wearing a thick apron at the time of the attack, which partially protected her, and her wounds were not life threatening. Liberty Times reported that Wu was treated for 7 or 8 puncture wounds.

Police arrested Zhang, and after interrogation, Zhang was sent to the Keelung District Prosecutor’s Office to face charges including attempted robbery, and attempted murder.
