A police officer who was critically injured in a single-vehicle crash in Pingtung County was found to have a blood alcohol level seven times over the legal limit, according to reports today, September 24.
The 25-year-old detective named Chen drank alcohol with a colleague in his office at the Linyuan Police Station in Kaohsiung City after finishing his duties at 2:00 am.
Chen left the station at around 4:00 am to return to his home in Pingtung County. However, Chen’s vehicle hit a traffic separator in Donggang Township at around 4:50 am.
Chen was unconscious when firefighters extracted him from the badly damaged car, and remains in a critical condition with unstable vital signs and a coma index of 3. A blood test showed that Chen had a blood alcohol level of 1.08 mg per liter, well over the legal limit of 0.15 mg/l.
