Police chase ends with suspect shot in Yilan County

Police shot and injured a suspect after he attacked a police officer following a car chase in Yilan County.

Yilan County police were on a routine patrol at around 10:00 pm when they spotted a Nissan March bearing a suspected stolen license plate on Huludu Bridge in Yuanshan Township. When the officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver sped up and tried to escape.

Police chased the suspect car for more than 10 minutes, and several kilometers, to Jinshan West Road where the suspect lost control of his vehicle and ran into the wall of a convenience store. Police stopped their patrol car behind the suspect’s vehicle to block his escape.

The suspect rammed the police vehicle in reverse, but he was unable to escape. A passenger in the vehicle then exited the car and attacked an approaching police officer. A deputy captain named Zhuang fired at the suspect, hitting him in the waist, and causing him to fall down on the spot.

The 57-year-old man who was shot, named Gao, was sent to the National Yang Ming University Hospital for emergency treatment for a ruptured spleen, intestinal bleeding, lung contusion, and other injuries. Medical staff said that Gao’s vital signs were stable and his life was not in danger.

Gao has previous criminal convictions, including robbery, and is on the police wanted list.

The driver of the vehicle, who was not named in reports, was arrested and taken in for interrogation. Police found a drug inhaler in the car and are searching for unknown objects that Gao was seen throwing out of the car window during the police chase.

Amazing how so much violence results from addictive drugs that initially make one feel peaceful and in harmony with others.
