One dead, 20 injured after bus crashes on mountain road

One man died, and twenty people were injured, after a bus crashed on a downhill section of road in a mountain district of Nantou County today, November 30.

The 23 seater bus was carrying tourists from Kaohsiung City when it crashed near Aowanda National Forest Recreation Area in Ren’ai Township at around 12:30 pm.

According to the 51-year-old driver, named Lin, the brakes on the bus failed, and as it gathered speed on the windy downhill section, Lin attempted to use the handbrake, and to run the bus into the mountainside to slow down. However, the bus bounced off the wall and flipped over onto the guardrail on the other side of the road.

A 57-year-old man named Huang was thrown from the bus on impact, and died at the scene of the crash.

Twenty other people were injured, including five who were described as seriously injured.

The driver was tested and found to be not affected by alcohol.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
