An elderly man in Kaohsiung City has been charged with attempted murder, after attacking his wife with a chopping knife, cutting her 20 times, before locking himself in a room and standing off with police for more than two hours.
At around 9:00pm yesterday evening, June 8, 77 year-old Mr Ye quarreled with his 72 year-old wife, took a cleaver, and chopped at her face and body, until the knife started breaking along with the bones in his right hand, which fractured during the attack.
The couple’s daughter-in-law heard Tsai’s screams and called 119, telling them that her father-in-law had killed her mother-in-law.
Mr Ye’s wife, Ms Tsai, suffered severed fingers on her right hand, a ten centimeter cut to her face and 18 other knife wounds. Tsai was rushed to Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital and underwent multiple surgeries, but is still not out of danger.
Mr Ye went to the 5th floor of the house and locked himself in a room, barricading the door with a plank of wood, and refusing to come out. After a two hour stand-off, during which police and two of his daughters pleaded with him to come out, police entered the room through a window and arrested the suspect.
Mr Ye confessed that he believed Ms Tsai was having an affair, and had a lover. Mr Ye had been involved in 4 vehicular accidents since last year, and had become convinced that his wife had arranged the accidents. In one incident in March this year, Ye had quarreled with his wife, left the house, and was immediately hit by a car. This convinced him that his wife had called a third party to arrange the accident.
