Marines deployed to vulnerable districts as tropical storm approaches Taiwan Strait

Marines equipped with amphibious vehicles have been deployed to flood prone areas in Tainan City, Kaohsiung City, and Pingtung County after the Central Weather Bureau issued land and sea warnings for tropical storm Mekkhala as it approaches the Taiwan Strait today, August 10.

The CWB issued heavy rain advisories for all cities and counties for today and tonight, and rain is expected to continue through tomorrow as Mekkhala passes through the Taiwan Strait.

Mekkhala is expected to make landfall in Fujian Province, China tomorrow morning, August 11.

A land warning was issued by the CWB at 8:00 am marking the first land warning issued for the 2020 typhoon season. The Ministry of the Interior opened the Central Emergency Operations Center shortly afterwards.

The islands of Penghu and Kinmen are expected to bear the brunt of the impact, according to reports. The Penghu County Government issued stop class and work orders for tonight and tomorrow morning, while Kinmen County will stop work and classes tomorrow.
