Man Sentenced to Death for Murder of Relatives

A Taoyuan man was sentenced to death today, February 13, for a multiple murder by arson committed Chinese New Year’s eve 2016.

February 7, 2016, Weng Ren-xian (翁仁賢), 51, purchased 20 liters of gasoline and distributed it into various containers on the second floor of the house. He then waited for his older siblings to gather with their families in the first floor dining room before pouring gasoline around the house in Longtan, Taoyuan City.

A total of 16 people had gathered for the feast.

When his several of his relatives were alerted by the smell of gasoline and went out to investigate, Weng poured a large container of gasoline down the stairs from the second floor and lit the fluid, causing an intense blaze that killed six people and left 5 injured.

Among the dead were Weng’s mother and father and two of his brother’s children.

Weng showed no remorse for his crime, and complained that he had suffered years of bullying, and that his parents had favored his older brother, who was educated, and enjoyed a successful career.

Taoyuan District Prosecutors Office asked the court to hand down the ultimate penalty for the crime of killing one’s lineal ascendants. At 5:00pm, Taoyuan District Court sentenced Mr Weng to death.
