Man Rescued From Burning Car: Wife Jumps to Her Death
A man attempted to commit suicide by setting his car alight but was rescued by police. When the man’s wife was informed of the incident, she jumped to her death from their 9th floor apartment.
Shortly before 3:00am, police in Sanmin District, Kaohsiung city attended to a report of a car on fire under a bridge. When the officers arrived, they heard a call for help, and found a man beside the burning car. The officers pulled the man away from the flames.
Fifty-five year-old Mr Zhuang (莊), who is believed to have attempted to commit suicide by self-immolation, suffered 2nd and 3rd degree burns to 100% of his body and was rushed to the burns unit of Kaoshiung Medical University Hospital.
After police identified Mr Zhuang, they called his wife to inform her. When Mrs Zhuang found out what had happened, she immediately committed suicide by jumping from a window of their 9th floor apartment.
Police told reporters that according to their understanding, the couple, who ran a small rice shop, were NT$20 million in debt. The couple’s daughter told police that her mother had been up all night sitting beside her bedroom window. Their son told police his mother had a record of previous suicide attempts.
