Man Dies After Being Hacked with Watermelon Knife

A man bled to death after being hacked in the leg with a watermelon knife in the middle of the street in Kaohsiung City this morning. The deadly attack was the result of a dispute over a debt.

At around 6:00am, the 42 year old victim, Mr Ou, met with a man in his 20s named Chen on Baojing Street, Zuoying District, to negotiate over an NT$30,000 debt. An altercation ensued during which Chen drew a watermelon knife and slashed Ou in the left thigh. Ou’s femoral artery was severed, causing massive bleeding.

As Ou collapsed into a pool of his own blood in the middle of a zebra crossing, Chen dropped the watermelon knife, and fled.

Paramedics arrived shortly after and attempted to stop the bleeding as they rushed Mr Ou to the hospital, but the Ou was declared dead shortly after arrival.

Chen later turned himself in at a police station. Chen told police that he had not meant to kill Ou, but had merely wanted to teach him a lesson.
