Man critically injured in level crossing accident was rushing to catch a train

Two men on a motor scooter were injured, one critically, after being hit by a train on a level crossing in Tainan City last night, and the scooter rider said that he had ignored the red lights and boom gates because his friend was in a hurry to catch a train.

The 46-year-old scooter rider, named Liu, and his pillion passenger, who remains unnamed in reports, were hit by a local service train on a level crossing on Zhongzheng Road at 8:44 pm yesterday. Liu suffered bruises to his limbs and remained conscious after the accident. However, Liu’s pillion passenger was seriously injured and unconscious. The seriously injured man remains in the intensive care unit at Chi Mei Hospital in a critical condition.

Police tested Liu and found that he was not affected by alcohol at the time of the accident. On top of fines for traffic violations, Liu will face charges of endangering the public.

Around 200 passengers on local service train No.3267 were disembarked from the train and had to walk a short distance back to Xinshi Station to make alternative travel arrangements.
