Kaohsiung floods, heavy rain warning for nine counties, more plum rain on the way
Level one flood warnings were issued for Kaohsiung City and Pingtung County this morning, heavy to extremely heavy rain warnings were issued for counties and cities in Taiwan’s central and southern districts, and a stationary front will bring possibly disaster-level rains starting Tuesday according to the Central Weather Bureau, today, Sunday, June 20.
The Water Resources Department issued flood warnings for Kaohsiung City and Pingtung County early this morning as thunderstorms brought heavy rain causing accumulation of surface water in Dashu District, Niaosong District, Nanzi District, Renwu District, in Kaohsiung City, and Donggang Township and Chaozhou Township in Pingtung County.
According to the Central Weather Bureau, from midnight to 9:30 am the highest accumulated precipitation occurred in Dashu District, Kaohsiung City with 181.5 millimeters, followed by Chaozhou Township, Pingtung County with 157 millimeters.
The Central Weather Bureau issued extremely heavy rain warnings for Nantou County, Yunlin County, Kaohsiung City, and Pingtung County, while heavy rain advisories were issued for Taichung City, Changhua County, Chiayi City, Chiayi County, and Tainan City.
Today’s rain is due to the influence of southwesterly monsoonal winds bringing moisture to coastal districts and the windward side of the Central Mountain Range.
Meteorologists warn that a stationary front is approaching Taiwan and will interact with the southwesterly airstream starting Tuesday bringing a typical rainy season pattern of small to medium-scale convective systems accompanied by heavy rain and severe weather including lightning and possible strong winds continuing until Friday.
